5-26-2019: Green Summit Cemetery (Adelphi, Ohio):
The 2019 Green Summit Memorial Day Ceremony was a different experience than in other years.
A major rainstorm came in just about the start of the program, and while the band carried on in order to finish the song they were on and then play "The Star Spangled Banner", it was readily apparent that carrying on was not going to work. We were officially "dismissed" by the Program Coordinator.
Some of the band had already donned ponchos, some loyal band spouses held umbrellas over their favorite band members, and those band members who were ill prepared just did without anything
Plus, we had hail the size of lima beans, and it was an odd experience to be playing and hear the hail hit your metal horn. Fortunately, I had brought an older horn kept for just such an unpredicable performance environment.
Most importantly however, in keeping with the Memorial Day Ceremony, we had John (Trumpet) come in from the Chicago area, who brought his son with him to play Trombone. John lends his talents to a national cemetery fairly recently opened in that area, and estimates that he has now performed "Taps" for between 6,000 and 6,500 veterans' funerals!
Naturally, these funerals happen year-round, and so he has assisted with the veterans' funerals in Chicago Summers, Chicago Springs, Chicago Autumns, AND the dreaded Chicago Winters!
He is a veteran, as well. We thank him for his service, and for his service to the veterans for whom he is playing "Taps".
Even after all these years, this band is a hearty bunch!

7-20-2019: Lancaster Music Festival Family Day at the Fairgrounds:
This was a different experience for us.
We were getting everything together to start when the clown band who had been walking the grounds , the SUPAFUNBAND from Columbus, Ohio walked up on stage.
The end of the story is that we talked them into sitting in with us and they stayed for the first number.
They did a great job with us, they do a great job wherever they go, and you can see a couple pictures of them in this gallery. Plus you can learn more about them from their web site (below):
SUPAFUNBAND
We hope they stop by, again!

7-20-2019: Laurelville Firemen's Festival:
This festival is pretty much always the same day as the Lancaster Music Festival.
The temp on the gas station sign across the street in Laurelville said 97 degrees just before we started to play, and I'm sure everyone in the band could believe it!
So here is the score card for today's activities:
This band is made up of some pretty tough people!

8-3-2019 (Sat): Ross County Fair:
As a matter of record, 2019 marks the 75th Ross County Fair.
Plus, The Adelphi Community Band has been with the Ross County Fair for every year of the fair's existence, and is one of only a handful of organizations that can say that.
What a remarkable achievement!

8-4-2019: Sunday at the Ross County Fair
Today completed the band's run at the 75th Ross County Fair, and was also the band's 75th year in playing for the Fair.
Many of us in the band already have a lifetime of memories of the Fair playing for:
For many years, all those performance would happen in the same day!
I remember 1977, which is the summer when I started my first big job after college, and from which I am now retired.
I was worried how I would be able to earn enough leave time in order to be able to take off and play for 3 days at the Fair with the Band!
It all worked out, and I didn't miss a single day!
It has been a good run for all of us, and we all look forward to coming back in 2020!....We hope our favorite food booth orders enough fish!

10-9-2019 Fairfield County Fair:
We know that the band has played at the Fairfield County Fair since at least 1957.

2019 Circleville Pumpkin Show:
The Circleville Herald has stated that the band started playing at the Circleville Pumpkin Show in 1925.
Circleville Herald 2012 Souvenir Edition
The band started in 1880 and the Pumpkin Show started in 1903.
We have a copy of the 1925 article from the Circleville Herald, plus a copy of the 1925 Pumpkin Show Program, that confirms that the band was , indeed, contracted to the play at the Show that year, but the article doesn't state that 1925 would be the first year for the band there.
1925 Circleville Pumpkin Show Program
However, with 1925 as the band's start date, this could mean that 2019 would be 95 years since the band first played at the Pumpkin Show.
What an amazing record!

10-18-2019 Friday:
On Friday night of the Pumpkin Show, the band usually only plays in the evening parade.
This night, the Adelphi Community Band was not only the FIRST BAND, but also the FIRST UNIT right behind the color guard!

10-19-2019 Saturday at the Circleville Pumpkin Show
In the band's tradition, they have now finished their 2019 Performance year with a concert and the Saturday night parade at the Circleville Pumpkin Show.
The band was fortunate and honored to be the FIRST unit behind the Color Guard to lead both the Friday and Saturday night parades.
For the band, the only pieces of business that remain now are the end-of-the year business meeting and dinner, and to plan for 2020.......hopefully including recruiting some more musicians and prepping music.
For any band members who do not receive information about the band dinner by Tuesday 10-22-2019, please contact me at:
