5-16-2022 Practice:
As a change of pace from recent years, the band started in September 2021 to add more practices to our schedule. We can't do new music if we don't practice as a group, and there are so many great marches and serenades out there that we want to add to our library. The musicians are liking the additional songs, and it s nice to not to have several months gap between being able to play music with our friends.
I was able to grab some snapshots while some of the musicians drifted in, but once they all got there, it got kind of busy with sharing band news, announcements, updates on our absent musicians, etc.

5-23-2022 Practice:
We scheduled a couple practices in May this year to get prepped for our Memorial Day observances. So, we caught some candid shots tonight while we were all getting settled in and enjoying some social time before we started practice.

Sunday 5-29-2022 Memorial Day Week-End Observance at the Adelphi Green Summit Cemetery:
The Adelphi Community Band has been proud to have been a part of this observance for many decades. Held by the flagpole in the center of the cemetery, the cemetery is at the top of a hill and offers a beautiful view of the the farm land below. The VFW reads the names of the veterans buried at the cemetery, and many members of the audience come from miles around to pay their respects to friends and family members buried there.

Monday 5-30-2022 Memorial Day Observance at the Hallsville Cemetery:
Over the years, The Adelphi Community Band has participated in countless Memorial Day observances throughout the surrounding counties and even into Chillicothe. Our participation in many of those observances has come and gone for various reasons, but our research into the band's history indicates that the band has been participating in this observance in Hallsville since at least the early 1950's.
Even aside from copies of numerous newspaper articles announcing the band's participation in this service, we have pictures on our web site of the band in a parade marching toward the cemetery, as well as pictures of the band in formation playing music in front of one of the two Hallsville churches the service would generally be held at before the parade to the cemetery.
The Adelphi Band is proud to be of service to our home communities by participating in both the Hallsville and Adelphi Memorial Day observances.

Saturday June 18, 2022,Pickaway County Fair Harness Races:
Looking back through our history, there are not many county fairs in our area where we have NOT played for the harness races.
This has included us playing for the Hocking County Fair races (Logan), Pickaway County Fair races (Circleville) , Pike County Fair races (Piketon), Ross County Fair races (Chillicothe), and even the Fayette County Fair races (Washington Courthouse) , We have actually played at many more county fairs than that, but for other purposes and not for the harness races.
There is something neat about playing in a community band for the county fair harness races. You can gladly teach the younger musicians all the important things they will need to know in life, like the definitions of: Daily Double, Trifecta, Quinella, Win-Place-or-Show, and how to read the racing program. The musicians can munch on their favorite fair food in between numbers, and we can all chit chat and share the news of the day and the latest developments regarding the other musicians. And...we get to play out favorite marches!
The band is fortunate to have a long association with the Pickaway County Fair, and we are delighted to be asked back for 2022. Even more so as we continue to marvel at the numerous renovations that have been completed on the fairgrounds in recent years. It truly is a showplace for all visitors!

Monday July 4, 2022, Ashville July 4th Parade:
For the band, it just wouldn't be July 4th without being in the Ashville 4th of July Parade!
Truly one of the best attended parades that we participate in, with seeming wall-to-wall people through the entire parade route on both sides of the route.
This is one of those parades where both the musicians and the crowd all seem to appreciate the band's music library of truly great and classic marches! We had a GREAT band today, the crowd was enthusiastic, and we were playing some of our newer, classic marches. It was just a GREAT day for a parade in Ashville, Ohio!

Saturday, July 23, 2022, Lancaster Festival Fair Day at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds:
The band is proud to have been a part of the Lancaster Festival schedule of events at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds for many years.
There are always a number of unique activities and bands for all ages and interests on that day, and having band concerts underneath those wonderful shade trees on the Fairgrounds is the stuff that summers are supposed to be made of.

Sunday, August 7, 2022, Ross County Fair Harness Racing:
The band is extremely proud of its association with the Ross County Fair.
The band currently holds the distinction of being with just a handful of other groups/organizations that have been with the Ross County Fair every year that there has been a Ross County Fair, except for 2020 when they only held an abbreviated fair due to the pandemic. For many of us, this is our home county, and going to the Ross County Fair is almost like going to a family reunion.
Besides, playing for harness races is fun.

- You get to sit and talk to your friends DURING the races since you only play BETWEEN the races.
- You have time to go out and enjoy your favorite festival foods. Fish sandwiches and french fries seem to be the favorites of the marjority of our musicians.
- After the performance, you get to wander the fairgrounds like you were going to come and do anyway, even if the band weren't going to play.
- Seriously...when is there ever a BAD day to go to a county fari?

Thursday, October 13, 2022, Fairfield County Fair (Lancaster, Ohio):
Our area of Ohio is surrounded by many really good county fairs, and we are fortunate to be able to play for several of them. However, in contrast, during several recent trips to west Texas for family reasons, we routinely drove by a small area that looked more like a discarded gravel pit than anything else, only to be told later that this was their county Fairgrounds! And the friendly locals could not believe our descriptions of what we call "county fairs", which are the wonderful events we get to annually see throughout Ohio.
The Fairfield County Fair is in a beautiful setting. It sits next to Rising Park. From the Fairgrounds, and especially from the Grandstand area, you get to look up and see Mt. Pleasant. From the top of Mt Pleasant, the entire area serves as a beautiful panorama worthy of a Post Card. It is the very definition of "picturesque", and we enjoy playing there every year.
Our own research through our own newspaper library shows that the band has been playing at the Fairfield County Fair since at least 1950. However, one article would indicate that our start date at the fair might be actually in the mid 1930's.
Either way, the band loves playing at the Fair!

Friday, October 21, 2022, Friday Night Parade at the Circleville Pumpkin Show:
What can you say about the Circleville Pumpkin Show that hasn't already been said?
"The Greatest Free Show on Earth" usually caps our performance season for the year, and what an event it is!
Festival food....bands...festival food...parades....festival food....concerts....festival food....all kinds of booths with a menagerie of things that can certainly capture your eye and often some of the contents of your wallet....and don't forget the festival food!
On Friday nights, the band usually performs for only the evening parade. In all of our travels throughout Ohio and in other states, an evening parade for many seems to be a novelty. But there is almost nothing that beats the sights, sounds, and colors of both parade floats and the marching bands slowly making their way past all the vendors trailers and tents, all with their own eye and ear catching sights, sounds, and colors. It is a magical experience, and the Circleville Pumpkin Show is wonderful place to be.
Sadly, Friday night at the parade turned out to be an extremely busy time, and we didn't get any personal pictures taken of the band. We did find one, though, from the Pumpkin Show web page (left). They always do a great job in photographing the units in the parade.

Saturday, October 22, 2022, Saturday Night Concert and Parade at the Circleville Pumpkin Show:
The band's history with the Circleville Pumpkin Show is pretty unique.
The Circleville Pumpkin Show was started in 1903. As a result of our own research into newspaper accounts, we know that The Adelphi Community Band has been playing there since at least 1925.

Some of the best memories of the Pumpkin Show for us older musicians, aside from our favorite Pumpkin Show foods, definitely include:
Also:
And don't get me started about all the stories we heard from the other musicians about playing for the FREE Acts!
Good times!

Some of the best memories of the Pumpkin Show for us older musicians, aside from our favorite Pumpkin Show foods, definitely include:
- The first time for many of us to play in a nighttime parade, and finding that it was too dark to read the music in some areas of the parade route. We then understood that THIS was why so many of the other musicians had small flashlights strapped to their instruments!.
Also:
- Playing for the Baton Twirling Concert preliminary round on the West Main Street Stage on Saturday afternoon,
- Then playing for a concert on Franklin Street before the 8:00 parade that evening,
- Then marching through the 8:00 parade, and
- Then, right after we finished the parade at Pickaway and Main Street, winding our way through the usually massive crowd back to the stage on West Main Street in order to play for the finals of the Baton Twirling Contest.
And don't get me started about all the stories we heard from the other musicians about playing for the FREE Acts!
