(This picture was taken on Saturday night of the Circleville Pumpkin Show, 10-22-2022 of the new sign we had made for the band trailer. It is kind of neat. It is wooden, and is made to fasten to the sign on the other side of the band wagon to make them into a box that protects the sign for transport.)
2023 PICTURES:
2023 extends the amazing record of the band as it recognizes its 143rd anniversary. What an accomplishment!
While not felt to be the oldest community band in Ohio, a title that becomes more and more open for debate as our extensive research continues, there still have not been found more than a handful of bands across the nation that claim to be older.
Sadly, each passing year usually means the loss of a musician and a good friend, or two, from the band due to health or other reasons.
However, it also means some new beginnings as several musicians have started to play with us in the last several months or so, and we are fielding more requests for the band to perform.
As this is being written, the outside window for this room in my house, where I sit to update the band web site, stands as a welcome barrier to the cold air and snow that I can look out and still see on the ground outside.
With this scene as a backdrop. I think I can safely speak for pretty much ALL the musicians in the band when I say that we cannot wait for warmer weather, fairs, festivals, all of the related (and delicious!) fair and festival food...... and band concerts!
Our first practice for 2023 is coming up in a couple more weeks or so as we once again get back together as both friends and musicians and prepare for our 2023 season!

March 13, 2023: Band Practice
Well, our band practices have started for 2023, and our second one for the year was on March 13.
Sadly, that night we were hit by the "Murphy's Law of Community Bands", in that we had several absences due to last minute schedule problems for the musicians. But, the ones who were there did a GREAT job. We welcomed a new French Horn player, and welcomed back a Euphonium player who started with us in February.
Meanwhile, we have already received some confirmations from some of our expected, regular performances, and the 2023 Summer is starting to shape up. This will be a fun year.

Memorial Day observance at the Adelphi Green Summit Cemetery
Memorial Day observance at the Adelphi Green Summit Cemetery
Our records show that we have been playing for Memorial Day observances in Adelphi,Ohio since at least the late 1920's. Some of those early observances were at the Town Hall, and some of the later ones would start at the Town Hall and then proceed to this cemetery.
The ceremony is extremely emotional as the names of all the veterans buried in this cemetery are read out loud.
The other events that the band plays for are fun, but it is these kinds of events that are the most important for the band to have on its schedule.
The band was very fortunate that a couple musicians came back from Illinois to play today and we had a new Bass Horn player with us.

Memorial Day observance in Hallsville, Ohio
Memorial Day observance in Hallsville, Ohio
While we know that the band has been participating in this observance since at least the mid-1940's, we suspect that there is information out there that will show a much longer history between the band and this event.
Regardless, the Hallsville Memorial Day observance is also a special event for the band and we feel honored to be asked to participate in it. In some years, the Hallsville observance would be the start of a day that would include as many as five ceremonies in one day held in cemeteries across at least 2 counties.

John Cryder Given Plaque for 70+ Years with the Band!
On Monday May 29, 2023, the Adelphi Community Band took advantage of the "hometown crowd" to award John Cryder (Trumpet) with a plaque recognizing his 70+ years with the band!
As a result of the band's extensive research on the band's history, we have found 14 people as of this date who have been with the band for 50, 60, and 70 + years!
What a remarkable acheivement for all of these musicians!.
John Cryder is only 1 of the last remaining two musicians with over 70 years in the band, and Glenn Hinton is the other. There are only 2 other musicians who the band has found thus far who have reached this goal, and those two passed away several years before.
Although John Cryder is basically a "Hallsville Boy", with his parents and most of his brothers and sisters buried in the cemetery just yards from where the presentation was made, his life and career took him to Illinois after college. But he would still return regularly to attend numerous family functions and to play in the band.
We congratulate John Cryder on his service to the band!

Laurelville Fireman's Old Time Festival
Laurelville Fireman's Old Time Festival
We know that the band has played at Laurelville festivals for several decades:
and so on for many decades afterwards.
The Laurelville festival is a great event. You can bring your lawnchair and sit by the bank (the kind you put money in) and listen to varous bands in the evening, grab a great tasting fish sandwich or a piece of your favorite pie, enjoy any of the other goodies being sold, get a chance to talk to friends and family you maybe haven't seen for awhile, and just sit back and enjoy a more relaxed pace from your usual day.
And on Saturday nights they have a Grand Parade.
- In 1947, the event was called the "Laurelville Street Fair", and the money raised was to be used for the children's playground at the city park.
- In 1951, the event was called the "Fall Festival", and the money raised was to be used for the children's playground at the city park.
- In 1957, the event was called the "Laurelville Street Fair", sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Department, and the money raised was to go toward the purchase of needed firefighting equipment.
and so on for many decades afterwards.

Pickaway County Fair
Circleville, Ohio
One of the typical summer traditions is for the band to play for harness racing at the local county fairs.
We have played for every Ross County Fair that has ever been held, the band has played at the Pickaway Couty Fair since at least 1946, and at some time or other we have played for every county fair in every county that touches Ross County. Plus, the band played for a couple years at the Ohio State Fair.
It is a fun time for the band, and a chance to compare and contrast county fair food choices among the musicians. And 2023 was no exception. The weather was great, the sky was clear and it was a beautiful day for harness racing in Pickaway County.

Ashville 4th of July Festival
What more can be said of 4th of July Festivals and community bands?
They go together like fireworks and band music.....yeah...I said it!
In this case, the Adelphi Community Band has a long history of participating in the Ashville 4th of July Festival and parade. We know for a fact that the band has been a part of this celebration since at least 1949!
Link to 1949 article.
The crowds are always large and enthusiatic, the floats and other parade entries are always colorful, the weather almost always cooperates with beautiful blue skies and some scattered white clouds, and there is not much better than hearing march music written by some of the world's best composers being played by a local community band coming down the parade route.
And then also being able to score some delicious festival food as soon as the parade is over!
Mmmmmmm....fish sandwiches.

Festival Fair Day
The Adelphi Community Band is once again pleased to be a part of the Lancaster Festival by taking part in the Festival Fair Day at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds.
There is always a variety of performers presenting their acts on the stage, the stage is strategically situated under some large shade trees, there are bleachers and picnic tables for the audience to sit on while enjoying the shows, and there are a number of other activities to see and do while on the grounds. It is always a great day.

Ross County Fair
Chillicothe, Ohio
The Ross County Fair is special to many of us.
Ross County is our home county as a band, and it is a wonderful fair and great looking fairgrounds. And to their credit, the Fair Board has spent considerable money over the years improving existing buildings and constructing new ones.
And, The Adelphi Community Band has been a part of The Ross County Fair for EVERY year that there has been a Fair! There are only a vary small handful of groups left in the county that can say that.
This year, like so many other years, the band played for the harness races. It is fun to play for the races, although we actually only play in between the races after they announce the winners.
From the Grandstand you can see the colors and lights of the various carny and food booths, and hear all the sounds associated with a county fair. Even after all these years for me to play in the fair, this is still exciting.
We also get a chance to chit chat between us, maybe talk about some of the new music that we have already picked for 2024, and we also have numerous opportunities to sneak out and grab our next assortment of Fair Food goodies!

Fairfield County Fair

The Adelphi Community Band is fortunate to routinely be a part of several of the county fairs in our area. That certainly includes the Fairfield County Fair.
The grounds are beautiful and the scenery of the surrounding area that can be seen from the Grandstand area is just stunning.
The band is also fortunate that we have been playing at the Fairfield County Fair since at least 1950!

Sadly, the band playing at the Fairfield County Fair is also kind of bittersweet. The fair is great, and the fair food is always tasty. But, for us, it is a reminder that our next performances will be at the Circleville Pumpkin Show in a couple weeks or so, and then our season is usually over for the year.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show is always a great time!
The food....the parade floats all lit up for the evening parades....the food....the music...and the food!
The Adelphi Community Band is proud to say that our research shows that the band has played at the Circleville Pumpkin Show since at least 1925! An amazing record!
Link to 1925 Pumpkin Show Ad.
In fact, since the band claims a start date of 1880, the band is almost 23 years OLDER than the Pumpkin Show.
The band's role in the Show has changed considerably over the decades. But for the last several years, the band has played in the 8:00 PM parade on Friday night .
Then on Saturday, the band has played a concert, in various locations through the years, at 6:00 and then again in the parade at 8:00 PM.
But the sadness is that the Pumpkin Show usually marks the end of our performance season.
The plan now, however, is that we have a practice scheduled in November for new music we have added to our folder for 2024.
