Members Who Have Passed
In going through my various newspaper clippings, I found some obituary notices about some of the band members.
While all of these documents can be found in their respective sections on the DOCUMENTS page of this web site, it seemed both appropriate, and easier to reference, to place these items in their own section as we remember friends who are now gone.
This section is by no means complete, since there have been literally hundreds to probably a thousand or more musicians who have played in the Adelphi Band since its start in 1880. As an example, one previous attempt at trying to list all the people who have played with the band documented 197 musicians over a 53 year period.....which only constituted about 38% of the length of time that the band has been in operation (as of 2019).
If you have a copy of an obituary notice for one of the members, you are welcome to send it to:
[email protected]
If I don't recognize the name, I may contact you for some background information on the band member.
These articles are placed in more-or-less alphabetical order.

Fetrow, Donald
|
|
Mr. Fetrow was the music teacher for the Centralia High School, which later became a part of the Zane Trace School System. The town of Adelphi later became parts of both of those districts.
In that role, he taught music to many of the musicians who later would become musicians with The Adelphi Community Band. As with other community bands, many of those musicians came and went, but as of 2023, two of Mr. Fetrow's students have remained with the Adelphi Community Band for 57 years. Mr. Fetrow's teachings were clearly not lost on these now life-long musicians.
But whether you ever studied music with Mr. Fetrow or not, everyone knew him. And respected him.
In 2012, Mr. Fetrow was present at a concert the band was doing in Hallsville (a small town just a couple miles or so away from Adelphi) and was pressed into duty as Director of the band, something he had not done for years.

Hinton, Sue
|
|
While Sue Hinton never played an instrument with the band, she was one of those invaluable supporters who any band needs, but whose work is generally done out of the public eye.
Sue was married to Glenn, who played Snare Drum with the band until health issues forced him to retire, and who was also the band's Business Manager for several decades.
Sue would often be the one seen driving the truck pulling the band wagon on parades, she would often help handle some of the band's official paperwork, and she could be counted on to prepare the strawberries and ice cream for the band's annual Spring treat after practice.

Mathew, Martha
|
|
While Martha did not play an instrument with The Adelphi Community Band, she actually did play Trombone with another local community band. However, her specific connection to this band includes the fact that she was the Mother of two musicians with the band, Mother-in-Law for another, and a Grandmother of 1 more.
She was one of the many supporters behind the scenes who played a major role in support of the band. Since the band has never had a dedicated space for either practicing or for storage of equipment, and that this whole side of the band's history is kind of complicated, she was one of the people instrumental in making sure for several decades that the band had a great space to practice in, that it was pretty much always at their disposal, and she even paid the bill for the use of the space.
Martha also created many of the early audio cassette and VCR recordings of the band during performances that have since been transferred over to YouTube videos.

While Mr. Savage never played an instrument with the band, he was certainly Chillicothe's local music historian, he was the band's Announcer at Washington DC in June 1980 for the band's 100th anniversary performance on the steps of the Capital Building, and also later for a concert that day in Alexandria, Virginia.
He was also the band's Announcer for 2 concerts in Columbus Ohio's 1992 Ameriflora celebration.
