William Lockwood Huff
(January 16, 1875 – November 5, 1942)
Past Band Director for The Adelphi Community Band
=========================================================================================================================
Will Huff was many things, to include photographer, interior decorator, composer, and a proficient musician on many instruments.
One of these many things includes that he was born in Massieville, Ohio, which is a VERY small town next to State Route 23, just south of Chillicothe, Ohio. After a while living in other locations, Huff spent his remaining years in Chillicothe, Ohio.
In fact, on his return to Chillicothe, Will Huff became the Director for several local bands, to include:
1. The Adelphi Community Band
Adelphi, Ohio
2. The Meaco Band
(Made up of employees from the Mead Paper Company)
Chillicothe, Ohio
3. I.O.O.F. Band (International Order of the Odd Fellows)
Chillicothe, Ohio
4. The Kingston Band
Kingston, Ohio
5. The Londonderry Cornet Band
Londonderry, Ohio
Will Huff's incredible story, however, seems to really only start with these pieces of information.
You will find that the next web page contains individual files representing @ 950 newspaper articles and general web searches and printed material references on Will Huff and his family. These are largely from the period of 1900 to 1952.
You can pop them open on your web browser, or download any to your personal electronic device as desired.
Will Huff was a composer of marches, serenades, and other styles of music for bands. Some attribute the number of his compositions from as few as 60 to possibly as many as 90 or more. The majority of the opinions found through this research stated that the 90-100 number of compositions was more likely.
In fact, just through this research, @ 70 compositions were found.
You will understand why there is such a large discrepancy in this number a little farther in a Narrative which can be found on the next page.
While his works were certainly not as generally popular as those from other major composers of his time (think Sousa, King, Fillmore, etc.) , many of them were well known in his time, and many are still played today by bands from all parts of the country.
Links have been placed below to YouTube videos for some of his songs, and to some files of the individual instrumental parts to the songs attributed to the name Will Huff.
